That was essentially Virginia Commonwealth's message to the ESPN analyst last night as the Rams defeated USC 59-46 to earn an 11-seed in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Rams will face sixth-seeded Georgetown on Friday.
"You guys think Jay Bilas watched that game?" VCU coach Shaka Smart told media after the game.
Bilas was one of the many college basketball analysts to criticize the NCAA selection committee for choosing VCU and Alabama-Birmingham over teams such as Colorado and Virginia Tech.
"I've seen UAB play. I've seen VCU play," Bilas said Sunday. "All of the teams on the 'snub list' should have gotten in before those two. All of them. There's a reason none of us brought up UAB and VCU as having a chance to get in ? and it's because they had no chance to get in. The committee has gone against their own principles."
VCU finished the runner-up in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament, but was one of three teams from the conference to earn an NCAA tournament bid (George Mason and Old Dominion). But from the moment the brackets were announced, the selection committee was criticized for some questionable picks. VCU did have an RPI of 50 and was 1-2 against teams from the RPI Top 25, however all of those games were against Old Dominion (RPI 21). While VCU had a win over UCLA, it also had questionable losses to UAB, Drexel and James Madison.
But on Wednesday, the Rams looked as good as any team in the field, stifling USC's offense and outrebounding the Trojans 40-31.
"It feels really good because a lot of people were doubting us," Skeen said after the game. "We were able to come out and prove some people wrong. Instead of just talking about it, we just came out here and played."
