Clemson still had a chance.
With 1 minute, 35 seconds remaining in Clemson's first-round game against West Virginia, the Tigers were down by five with the ball.
Then Clemson was peppered. Dalton Peppered.
Wait, who?
Pepper, a sophomore reserve player, showed quick hands and stole the ball not once, not twice, but three times on consecutive possessions, two of which he turned into baskets. Overall, West Virginia scored seven points on Pepper's thievery and ended up winning the game 84-76.
What's most impressive about Pepper's feat, which drew chants of "Dal-ton Pep-per" from the crowd at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa Bay, Fla., was that defensive standout isn't really his role. Pepper came into the game with just six steals on the season. The 10 points he finished with matched a season high and he had only scored in double figures once since mid-November.
But in a game where Clemson's defensive prowess seemed to be turning the momentum the Tigers way, Pepper's effort was a much-needed addition to advance the Mountaineers to the next round.
