1. Florida players Cody Larson and Erik Murphy were arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly attempting to break into a car in the parking lot of a bar they'd been at until closing time. Murphy, a sophomore forward, averaged 10.8 minutes, 4.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game for Florida this past season, while Larson redshirted this season as a freshman.
2. Credit UNLV athletic director Jim Livengood for resisting the temptation to make a splashier hire and instead going with the safer, smarter choice to replace Lon Kruger. BYU associate head coach Dave Rice may not have the instant name recognition of Larry Brown, Bob Knight or even Reggie Theus, but the UNLV alum is an excellent coach and a good fit.
3. Dana Altman's rebuilding process at Oregon took a hit this weekend when starting guard Malcolm Armstead announced he would transfer. Armstead, who considered transferring last summer, will have one year of eligibility remaining and plans to enroll at a school closer to his Alabama home.
4. Longtime former Roanoke Times sports editor Bill Brill died on Sunday at age 79 as a result of the effects of cancer of the esophagus. How big of an impact did Brill make covering ACC basketball during his career? One of the visitors to Brill's hospital room on Sunday morning was none other than Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.
5. Canadian power forward Braeden Anderson may not be a can't-miss future star, but his commitment this weekend was important for Kansas. With both Marcus and Markieff Morris entering the NBA draft after their junior seasons, the Jayhawks desperately needed another big man on their roster behind likely starter Thomas Robinson.
The U.S. team defeated the World team on Saturday night at the Nike Hoop Summit in Portland in a matchup featuring 20 of the best high school seniors from across the globe. Here's a highlight video from the game including my two favorite plays, the first a no-look pass from Washington-bound Tony Wroten to Kentucky-bound Anthony Davis and the second a sweet behind-the-back dish to Davis from future teammate Marquis Teague.
"This was a dream job for Reggie, and I just thought it was an automatic. Most people wanted Reggie, or the people who I know. But I'm happy they got a former Rebel. It's hard for anybody to tear down Dave. He's a very good person and a very intelligent guy. I like Dave a lot." -- Jerry Tarkanian lamenting that UNLV chose Dave Rice to be its next coach instead of Reggie Theus. (Las Vegas Review Journal)
