Naturally, it took Army to breathe life into the first all-camouflage football uniforms last October, but once it was out there, there was no way other schools weren't going to rush to appropriate the military motif for themselves. And there was no way one of those schools wasn't going to be Oregon.
Ohio State beat the always fashion-conscious Ducks to the punch with a handful of camo-print helmets OSU intends to auction off for charity after Saturday's spring game. Instead of just pulling out any old thing from what must by now be a massive warehouse of once-worn threads it considers a closet, Oregon will introduce its own take on military appreciation on April 30 with camouflage jerseys (at least ? the full uniforms haven't been released) decorated with ribbons and achievements from across the branches, a significant expansion on last year's "Support Our Troops" theme. And that's not all! For the low low price of just $27.95, fans can also own their very own "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" t-shirts in black or white, with a portion of the proceeds going to support families of armed forces serving overseas.
It will also be the first time in more than a decade that most Americans purport to approve of what Oregon is wearing for a change ?and probably the last, pending the arrival of whatever crime against old-fashioned good taste the Ducks have planned for the runway the gridiron this fall. Haters gonna hate, but they'll come around someday. Slowly but surely.
