Tom Rowland, a CrossFitter and host of the television show Saltwater Experience, and Jessica Pamanian, fourth-place finisher at the 2010 CrossFit Games, are ready for the final workout of the Reebok CrossFit Open. Workout 11.6 twists a chest-to-bar Fran into a seven-minute AMRAP of escalating reps. The two athletes compete at CrossFit Queens in Queens, N.Y.
Going into the workout, Pamanian says she feels “great,” and Rowland is happy to be working out at his usual early morning time. However, he feels pressure to do well for a chance to move on to regionals.
“I think I have to do really well, and I think this one’s a hard one to do really, really well on because you’ve got a lot of guys that can do this,” he says.
After a grueling seven minutes, Rowland ends up with 107 reps.
“It was tough, tough, tough,” he says. “Just kept getting worse.”
Pamanian achieves 105 reps.
“Longer than I thought” is her perception after the WOD. She isn’t thrilled about her performance, but her coach, Steve Cirbus, is looking ahead to the Games.
“We try to push her as much as we can, you know, but she’s surpassed all of us, obviously,” Cirbus says. The coach is eager to give Pamanian some real competition at the Reebok CrossFit Games, to be held July 29-31 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
