CrossFit Kids With Tanya Wagner

Tanya Wagner, the 2009 CrossFit Games champion, is also a CrossFit Kids coach at her affiliate, CrossFit Apex. The cameras provide a glimpse into one of her CrossFit Kids classes as she coaches her young athletes.

Wagner begins her class by providing her athletes with a goal: the Good Sport of the Day Award. She teaches them sportsmanship by outlining the behavior that will earn them the award. Team building is developed through a fun hula-hoop game: the kids hold hands and must get the hula hoop around the circle without letting go of their neighbor’s hand.

The athletes learn the techniques they will practice in the workout to follow: “press up the sky” and “Oompa Loompa” for the push press. The workout reinforces teamwork and both new and previously learned skills. Finally, class ends with a game: zoo keeper.

“It’s all about the game at CrossFit Kids,” Wagner says.

She continues: “It’s so much fun. I love it. It’s exhausting, especially being pregnant. They’re so much fun. It’s worth it.”

Wagner, of course, gave birth to a baby boy on March 18 and now has a CrossFit Kid of her own to chase around.
