It's not easy to deliver with this much hype and anticipation — especially when you're 18 years old and donning a name across your chest of one of the five-most storied programs in college basketball.
But Josh Selby just blew everyone away, playing up to his exceedingly myth-like reputation Saturday afternoon.
The Kansas freshman guard, who was forced by the NCAA to sit out until today's game against USC, passed his first college test with ease. Selby scored 21, including a 3-pointer with 20.7 seconds left to lift No. 3 Kansas over Southern Cal, 70-68.
Selby seldom showed restraint or hesitance when the ball was in his hands; it was as if he was eager to make up for lost time and lost shots from the previous nine games he missed. No. 32 scored five 3s and also grabbed five boards.
Selby was so much fun to watch, and boy did the crowd at Phog Allen get LOUD, reaching 117.4 decibels in the final seconds. The Jayhawks are now 10-0, and many couldsoon consider this team the best in the country if Duke doesn't soon get its premier freshman point guard, Kyrie Irving, back from a toe injury.
The fact the game was even so close is another issue entirely and speaks more to USC's grit and unafraid nature to attack, attack, attack the tin. (Though flaws abound with KU, like they do with all teams, right now.) Kansas extended its nation's-best home-winning streak to 65 games, but this is the second close call to a Cali club in less than two weeks; fellow inferior Los Angeles school UCLA recently almost knocked off the 'Hawks at home.
There was another awaited debut in this one. USC's Jio Fontan, a transfer from Fordham, scored 15 points and was nearly as much a factor for the Trojans as Selby was for the Jayhawks.
