The Bowl Championship Series takes its share of heat for what it isn't and for the opportunities it fails to produce, as it should. But on a day when the BCS' public mouthpiece insisted that the sport is still much closer to go backward, to the old bowl anarchy, than it is to striding forward into its glorious playoff future, even I'm willing to concede this much: Monday night is a worthy stage for Auburn and Oregon, the only teams that were ever on track to be on it over the last six weeks of the regular season, and they're worthy of the stage (even if they're not the only ones). That hasn't always been possible, and it may still not be the best the sport can do in the long run. But for one night, even the haters have to acknowledge that it doesn't get much bigger.
