• We're going to take this inevitable decision one day at a time. One of the only people on earth who wasn't totally blindsided Wednesday by Urban Meyer's resignation from Florida: His boss, athletic director Jeremy Foley, who was informed of Meyer's impending decision over the weekend and had a few days to lay some groundwork before the search for one of the most coveted coaching jobs in America became public. Foley said he hopes to name Meyer's replacement in "two to two-and-a-half weeks," or just before the Gators kick off the new year against Penn State in the Outback Bowl, now set as Meyer's final game. Elsewhere, though, the outcome of the process is a foregone conclusion: Ex-Meyer protégé Dan Mullen can commit to Mississippi State until he's maroon in the face, but some writers on the Bulldog beat are already wishing him luck at the new gig. Meanwhile, Louisville AD Tom Jurich vowed to "do everything in my power" to hold on to coach Charlie Strong, architect of the top-10 defenses that anchored Florida's dominant runs in 2006 and 2008-09, calling Strong "a perfect for this city and this university." Presumably, that includes opening the checkbook. [Louisville Courier-Journal]
• CSI (Coaching Search Innuendo): Miami. The Miami Herald has issued the latest round of rumors in the Hurricanes' ongoing search to replace Randy Shannon, reporting that The U has already spoken with Mullen, UConn's Randy Edsall and Texas Tech's Tommy Tuberville, a Miami assistant on Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson's staff in the halcyon days. The 'Canes have also received permission from Nebraska to speak to Cornhusker coach Bo Pelini, according to the Herald, which came as news to Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne: "Bo's never talked to me about anything like that," Osborne said Wednesday. "If he got permission (to talk to Miami), he didn't get it from me."
Pelini and current Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt both worked for Oklahoma in 2004, and Hocutt was a linebacker on Kansas State teams that employed Pelini's brother, Carl, as a graduate assistant in the early nineties. Bo Pelini has sent "mixed signals" to Miami, according to one source in the Herald, a front he maintained Wednesday night by telling reporters in Lincoln, "I don't address rumor and innuendo." • Your resumé is on file. And for the record, athletic directors, Mike Leach will take the job. Which job? According to the Dallas Morning News, any job: "Really, I'm interested in all of them," Leach told the paper. If only it was reciprocal. [Dallas Morning News]
• Baker busted. Nebraska defensive tackle Baker Steinkuhler, 21, has been suspended for the Holiday Bowl after being ticketed on suspicion of drunken driving Tuesday morning. Steinkuhler, son of 'Husker great Dean Steinkuhler, is still Rivals' only five-star recruit ever out of the state of Nebraska and has started all 13 games this season. [Associated Press]
• Docket men. Four former Toledo football players are expected to plead guilty to conspiracy in an alleged point-shaving scandal, a year after being indicted along with two former Rocket basketball players and two "businessmen" from Detroit. The players, Adam Cuomo, Harvey "Scooter" McDougle Jr. and Quinton Broussard, allegedly conspired with bettors to fix final scores in 2005-06. [Associated Press]
Quickly… Two Washington State players arrested in an October pot bust at their home have been charged with felonies and booted from the team. … Randy Shannon left hand-written notes to some of his players on his way out at Miami. … Incoming Colorado coach Jon Embree is pulling double duty to recruit and assemble a staff. … Sugar Bowl tickets are going fast, and Ohio State fans may be outnumbered. … And listen here, if you dare, to the inevitable Cam Newton Christmas song.
