CrossFit Is Elemental

How do you make CrossFit more approachable? Try an “elements” class to ease beginners into the program.

Join co-owner Myles Lewis and coach Kelly Edelman at CrossFit Avalanche, where they’ve launched a successful Elements class for their new athletes. According to Edelman, these classes provide “a taste of what to expect” but also scale back the workout of the day and break down the movements. The purpose is to build technique and confidence before ramping up intensity.

“I would like to think that ultimately all of these people will eventually just join into the regular WODs once they’ve gone through a program with the Elements class,” Edelman says.

Elements classes begin with a dynamic warm-up and mobility drills similar to those on Kelly Starrett’s MobilityWod. Coaches then break down the movement of the day into bite-sized pieces perfect for beginner CrossFitters. This breakdown is applicable outside the gym, too.

“All of a sudden these big problems just don’t seem so big anymore,” Edelman says. “If you just attack them little bits at a time, you can get there. You can get to the end no matter what you’re doing.”

Ultimately the Elements classes are about building your community through a solid foundation.

“It’s our family,” Edelman says.
