“He expects your best, and he will push you to that best at every opportunity,” one CrossFit Hickory athlete says of her coach, Kent Stamey.
Stamey describes how he found CrossFit and started his own affiliate. Prompted by his Navy SEAL cousin to give CrossFit a try, Stamey started following main-site programming without scaling and was told to “just suffer.” And that’s what he did. He used hardcore homemade equipment cobbled together from assorted building materials, including a log for a barbell and rock for his wall-ball.
As a baseball coach, Stamey started using CrossFit with his athletes and saw immediate results.
“Seeing changes in myself and the kids that I was coaching, I thought, ‘Everybody ought to do it,’” he explains.
Stamey says he gets satisfaction from helping his clients make progress and holding them to his high standards.
“I think it’s the trainer, the owner, that makes it, that sets the tone. And you have to be able to really be a people person and be able to listen and hear what their needs are and their wants are and try to make them happen,” Stamey says.
